Sad Times Two

One of America's great sportscasters, Curt Gowdy, dead at the age of 86. Keith Olbermann has a fine eulogy, here.

Also, Billy Cowsill, lead singer for the Cowsills and the inspiration for David Jones' Keith Partridge character, dead at the age of 58. This is particularly sad, given that his family learned of his death while attending a memorial service for his brother (and bandmate) Barry, who was apparently killed by Hurricane Katrina (his body was discovered in December).

Rest well, gentlemen.

Update: Obviously, I meant David Cassidy, not David Jones. Billy Cowsill did not inspire David Jones, so far as we know, but David - or, rather, Davy - Jones was (of course) the inspiration for Axel Rose's little "hip-swinging-shuffle while playing the tambourine" dance, which he no doubt learned by watching The Monkees as a child. I apologize for the boneheaded error.
